At 106 years young, Mary is a remarkable woman. She was born in Sheffield in April 1915 and enjoyed a “very happy childhood”. She had “lovely” parents – her dad worked as a morning paper deliverer and her mother was a music teacher, and virtuoso piano performer.

Mary’s family regularly visits her in the home, although she misses her husband John, terribly. The pair met in 1939 and married in Cairo, Egypt in May, just four short months before the outbreak of the Second World War. Mary and John had to move to Jerusalem where they stayed together for 2 years and eventually Mary had to leave John behind for Durban, South Africa and she was 5 months pregnant! Her first child was born a day after John’s birthday, but they had to wait to meet one another for nearly 3 years.

Following the war, Mary, John, and their daughter returned to York, North England, where John was positioned and also his favourite UK city. They went on to have 1 more daughter, 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mary inherited her mother’s musical talent, and she likes all types of music. She also enjoys watching television, listening to CDs and audiobooks, and always likes to look smart.
