Alex Flori, nurse, at Tunbridge Wells Care CentreAlex Flori, a nurse here at Tunbridge Wells Care Centre (TWCC), received a highly commended at the Great British Care Awards’ south-east regional final in Brighton recently.

One of 13 finalists in the hotly contested Social Care Nurse category, Alex really impressed the judges. Describing her as “a beacon of positivity in the nursing profession,” they added: “Alex is always eager to help with a smile, her unwavering optimism and compassionate nature make her an inspiring and cherished team member.”

Alex takes the time to know her residents well and is quick to notice any changes in their health and wellbeing. She uses her initiative and has the confidence, determination and courage of her convictions to act on her concerns, calling in medical help if necessary. Her calm bedside manner and clear communication inspire trust and confidence, putting residents and families at ease. “She’s an exceptional nurse,” said one relative.

She knows when a resident is moving closer to end of life, explaining everything to families and supporting them with compassion. To keep her end-of-life knowledge current, she regularly does shifts at Hospice in the Weald, sharing knowledge and techniques with her colleagues at TWCC. As a result, our home enjoys a closer working relationship with the hospice.

Alex is also a motivational leader who commands authority and respect, inspiring others to provide the best possible care. Colleagues appreciate her willingness to demonstrate tasks and help them perform their roles better.

“She gets others on board with her vision – to provide great care,” says TWCC’s manager Donna Barks. “She’s here for the residents, to make their lives better, and nothing else. Alex comes to work to make a difference, and she does.”

“I feel proud and privileged to have been nominated for this award, and even more so to have been highly commended. It means a lot to be recognised by Tunbridge Wells Care Centre, and our parent company Canford Healthcare, for the work that I do. Some of my achievements have come about because of the support and confidence of my home manager Donna, for which I am truly grateful,” says Alex.
