Choosing a Home

Moving into residential care represents a big change, and you want to be sure you have made the right choice.

So how do you go about choosing a new home? We have covered key points which may help you decide.

Care Needs Assessment

The first step is a care needs assessment, a free service from your local authority’s social services department. This is particularly important if you need financial help, as the local authority will only fund care that has been assessed as needed. It also gives a professional view of the level and type of care required, which will help you to shortlist homes in your area.

What do local people say?

Word of mouth will help you. Does the home have strong links with local community groups, schools and volunteers? At Canford Healthcare, we think that enabling our residents to continue to play an active part in the community is important, even if they can’t get out and about as much as they used to together with compassionate care helps our residents to experience greater quality of life.

What does the CQC say?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regularly inspects care homes, and grades them on the quality of care they provide. Reports on care homes are published by the CQC, and you can download them from www.cqc.org.uk or the individual home’s website.
